Perfect Thanksgiving Foods and Memories

It is amazing how a food can spark a wonderful memory! My memory is of my grandmother dropping the turkey on the floor as she got it out of the oven and watching my grandfather wrestle the dog away from the turkey. Needless to say..that Thanksgiving was a vegetarian one, as we only had all the side dishes. Maybe that is why I love the sidedishes.
My favorite Thanksgiving foods are smashed garlic potatoes and sweet potato pie.
What is your favorite food/memory for Thanksgiving?

What a great memory! I can just picture the dog and your grandfather. I too had a Thanksgiving where our dog ate the turkey before we could. We still share that memory almost every year at the family table. I love Thanksgiving even more now that I work from home. I have so much extra time to plan and prepare for the holiday. It’s much less stressful to host family parties now. Happy Turkey Day!

Oh boy… What a visual delight! Grandfather wrestling the dog away from the turkey. I think my favorite Thanksgiving memory is the one in which my husband and I were driving our first car, a beat up, old, VW beetle, to Mom’s house. An ice storm began, and my husband had to keep pulling over to scrape the windshield until we could reach a gas station, and buy some de-icer. An hour later, we’d travelled about five miles. Now our hoses to the windshield were frozen, so we bought the spray de-icer. All the way to Mom’s, my husband drove, and I hung myself out the window, in the freezing rain, to keep spraying off the ice. It wasn’t exactly “over the river and through the woods”, but the journey was certainly a memorable one.

My favorite holiday memory was having dinner with Grandpa, Grandma Aunts, Uncles and Cousins in my parents basement around the ping pong table. The only table big enough to fit everyone. I can still see Grandpa grabbing the turkey leg to eat and holding it up like he’d won a prize.
Another memory that isn’t mind but is My husband was born on Thanksgiving in 1944. His mom spoke of this every Thanksgiving. They said they had the best turkey ever because it was so well basted. She didn’t get any.
My favorite food is my husband’s turkey dressing and my mom’s homemade cinnamon apples which she still makes.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
